Mankind are facing grave challenges of survival such as social injustice, energy and resource depletion, and healthcare, making research progress in basic science key to a sustainable society. July 2022 to June 2023 is the United Nation’s “International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development”. Responding to such an important event, we have planned a series of events here in Taiwan, to help local people better understand how intertwined basic science is with sustainable development, and to show the world Taiwan’s abundant capacity in basic science. Our guiding philosophy is:
Grounded Science – Taking root, representing how scientific research is rooted in the locality’s context and challenges.
Sustainable Taiwan – To demonstrate our actions in solving major social issues to help Taiwan achieve sustainable development.
Science is not some distant and cold knowledge, it is a kind of literacy, a way of life. It is only through enhancement of scientific literacy for the entire nation and support for basic science research, that mankind would be able to confront our challenges and move towards a sustainable society. The events and activities of “Taiwan Celebrates the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development” is working towards this goal, and showing the world Taiwan’s exceptional achievement and hard work in basic science, science communication, and sustainable development.
