IYBSSD @ Taiwan outcomes performance

International Connections
Event Date | 2023/08/09 - 2023/08/10 Address | Taiwan

The research in basic science is largely driven by curiosity about the workings of natural phenomena, although not necessarily with a focus on practical applications. However, in response to the enormous threats and crises brought about by climate change and extreme events, water resources, loss of biodiversity, and the ravages of COVID-19, basic science can provide necessary means and tools. By emphasizing and investing in the development of basic science, promoting sustainable development of basic science through information provision, linking women, youth, and basic science, and fostering interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, and international dialogue, promoting the development of basic science in developing countries (such as Africa, Latin America, Asia, and small island states), and encouraging gender balance and regional diversity in teams and networks, promoting inclusive cooperation in the field of basic science research, and promoting the development of basic science skills through formal and non-formal educational activities, global social welfare can be enhanced, sustainable development goals (SDGs) can be improved, and social harmony can be promoted.

The results presentation event featured six outstanding experts in sustainable science communication. Their speeches covered various fields such as environmental studies, sustainability, climate change, and science communication. These presentations adeptly conveyed core issues, sparking our enthusiasm while offering practical solutions. The experts' insights enhanced our professional competence and deepened our understanding of the topics.

Across Taiwan, active participation in the IYBSSD@TAIWAN initiative was evident through workshops, exhibitions, and seminars. These events aimed to convey the fundamental principles of sustainable development through basic science to students and the wider community. The expert lectures and activities fortified our comprehension of sustainable science, elevated our sense of social responsibility, and fostered teamwork and innovative thinking. We gained not only knowledge but also a tangible appreciation for environmental conservation. Moreover, during brainstorming sessions at the World Café, we formulated future perspectives.

Our commitment to advancing sustainable science remains unwavering. Through further activities, we intend to disseminate sustainable knowledge, converting learning into action. Looking ahead, we plan to expand the scope of our initiatives to influence a larger audience, shaping more sustainable values. The end-of-term results presentation serves as a valuable platform for science communication professionals to enhance their collective knowledge. The expert talks and engagement broadened our horizons, enriching our comprehension of sustainable development. We are determined to continue contributing extensively to the field of sustainable science.
